The workshop series took place at one of Paris’ most historic bookstores, Shakespeare and Company. Each week highlighted a theme that Ali demonstrated through her own and other storyteller’s work. The themes included: Relationships, The City, Memories, and

Emotions & Ambiance. After examining examples of how such subjects can be portrayed, Ali asked participants to move from theory to practice. She brought various exercises, asking participants to take pen to paper and create their own stories, moving from basic drawings to more complex drawings and ideas. The result was lots of creativity, lots of participant interaction, and lots of learning. Plus, it was great fun – and free!

James Patrick Benn, Ali Fitzgerald workshop in Paris, 2018.

There were at least ten people of all ages and nationalities at each workshop. My work is both figurative and abstract, but above all conceptual. I always work from a theme that appeals to me and will allow me to deepen my research through the creative process. I am interested in the poetic expression that evolves through the theme and the conceptual aspect of the project. What I try to communicate is expressed through the idea, the purpose, as well as the color, texture, and architecture of the work. And sometimes through an emotion or through a state of being—or even sometimes through the title of the work.

The most important thing to me is to make sure that the work is not framed in a single perception. That way, the visitor who observes the work will have the freedom to do and live his own interpretation.

DÉRIVE no.3, 2014, Oil and mixed media on canvas mounted on wood

What is an artist's responsibility?

I cannot answer for other artists. Personally, I believe that my responsibility as an artist is to create projects that lead to reflection, to introspection. I must take a position and communicate my own interpretation of the world in which I live. Hoping that this will engender a dialogue...

Show us the greatest thing you ever made (art or not):

I have to mention two very important moments.

First one is when I was about 18 or 19 years old. I still did not know what I wanted to do or become. I decided to take a 35mm photography class in my school. I started to explore my city, Montréal. I took a series of snapshots of urban activity. When this photograph appeared to me in the darkroom, I did not know it yet, but it represented, in a way, the very beginning of my artistic approach.

Studying Photography,1983

The second one is during my BFA at Concordia University. I did a study in my sculpture and mixed media class. This study opened me up to the medium of sculpture as well as the medium of contemporary dance, which I was involved in for almost fifteen years before focusing my practice on painting and sculpture-installation.

Woman sitting on a cafeteria tray, Study, 1988

Tell us about a work you want to make but never will:

Something I dream to do is to find ten big, multicultural cities around the world. Then I would do an open call to find people (seniors, adults, children) who would like to participate on my project. In each city, I would create a huge work on paper with the prints of one hand and one foot of each person in the groups of people I would have selected. Under each hand and foot print, I would let them write their first name. After, I would find a building big enough to exhibit the work on paper which would be so long that it would cover each floor of the building. It is a dream...

Autoportrait avec oiseau de Los Angeles à la dérive. My past work has dealt with low-income housing complexes; modernist architectural ideals, drawing from Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Soviet architecture; and the phenomenology of space. I am fascinated by the language of spatial relationships and by the effect of architectural form and structure on the psychology of the human environment. My cultural background as an ethnically Latvian/Lithuanian artist informs this interest. My parents spent eight years after the end of World War II in displaced-person camps in Germany before they were allowed to emigrate to the United States. My work explores architecture’s relationship to cultural identity, social hierarchy, and psychological space.

Migrator 8, 2016, UV print on dibond on MDF, 9 x 9 x 4.5 inches

What is an artist’s responsibility?

To keep making work! I’ve probably seen a few too many friends stop making work. Artists are makers: we need to produce something, even if the world might not ever see it. I think an artist's responsibility is to ignore all the rejections, the financial balancing act, the bad relationships, the failed ideas, and just keep making work. Whenever I get that “what am I doing?” moment—and it happens more often than not—I’ll watch this stunning read of one of Sol LeWitt’s letters to Eva Hesse and remember I need to JUST DO!

Show us the greatest thing you ever made (art or not)?

Hanau 1, Layered laser-cut pigment prints, 2018, 14 x 21 inches, Unique

This is really hard for me to answer, probably because as an artist I’m never completely satisfied with anything I make. I think we all have nagging feelings of “what if I did this, or I should’ve tried that.” I also tend to be fond of whatever I am dedicating my practice to at the moment, and that can vary widely, from painting to installation to photography. Currently, I’m working on a series called “Displacement” which captures the traces of former WWII displaced person camps, combining past and present in a series of laser-cut images on photographic paper. Using my documentation of the camps, I am laser-cutting plea letters the refugees were sending from the photographs. My family’s displacement, which I am re-imagining and restoring in this body of work, is part of a long history of uprooted peoples for whom the idea of “home” is contingent, in flux, without permanent definition, and undermined by political agendas beyond their control. I’m really proud of this series. It’s the first time I’ve mined deep and personal into my family’s story, which is connected to the first largest refugee crisis, a history that is little known today.

Tell us about a work you want to make but never will:

I’m obsessed with large-scale sculpture. Rachel Whiteread and Gordon Matta Clark are some of my heroes. I have this dream of making gigantic work like that, but deep in my heart I know I probably never will.

Migrator 10, 2016, UV print on dibond on MDF, 7 x 9.5 x 4 inches

Who are three artists we should know but probably don’t?

Rita Grendze www.ritagrendze.com
Alison Carey www.alisoncarey.com
Julie Weber www.julielweber.com

—The ArtSlant Team

ArtSlant is an open Arts community with over 200,000 free, user-generated artist profiles. Some of the most influential resistance visuals come from the uprisings of May 1968 in Paris. That month there were strikes and protests, with half a million people marching through the streets chanting: “Adieu, de Gaulle!” (“Farewell, de Gaulle!”).

New York Times correspondent Steven Erlanger wrote of the time:

The movement began with student protests against archaic university rules and quickly radiated out to factories and other workplaces rife with political discontent.

Eleven million workers went on strike for two weeks and a student group called the Atelier Populaire occupied the École des Beaux-Arts, screen printing posters.

Many had catchy slogans evoking sexual freedoms like: “It is forbidden to forbid” and “Live without limits and enjoy without restraint!”

The student protestors created a workshop in the university, manufacturing simple and symbolic posters. There were no individual artists; instead the atelier circulated them anonymously, with no one person claiming authorship (or shouldering blame).

They printed posters upon request and taught serigraphy to people from the provinces and smaller French towns. Their graphics were simple, powerful, and effective. The Atelier Populaire declared their posters “weapons in the service of the struggle… an inseparable part of it. Their rightful place is in the centers of conflict, that is to say, in the streets and on the walls of the factories.”

The Atelier Populaire was also aligned with the Situationist movement, helmed by Guy Debord, which was invested in merging poetry and graphics as a visual propaganda strategy.

Below is my rendering of their poster “No to Bureaucracy”:

Their particular aesthetic resonated across the world, influencing Berkeley’s 1970 anti-war posters, among others.

And that’s the slightly hopeful note I’d like to leave on. One in which empowered visuals can educate, bind communities, and contribute to worthwhile struggles. Not all propaganda is “bad,” but we need to become visually literate in order to discern what we’re consuming. Because we consume a lot.

—Ali Fitzgerald

Fri, 06 Apr 2018 15:23:21 +0000 https://staging.artslant.com/ny/Articles/list https://staging.artslant.com/ny/Articles/list Under the Radar: Noel Laue | Ryan LaBar | Jarica Walsh

ArtSlant is an open Arts community with over 200,000 free, user-generated artist profiles. This week we seek answers from Txema Novelo.

What are you trying to communicate with your work?

Inspired by the work of Brion Gysin, Dan Graham, Genesis P-Orridge, my work proposes a meta-religion based on two main things: rock & roll and mysticism. Functioning like a secret order that emphasizes the spiritual attributes of musical movements like the blues, rasta, Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth (TOPY), Texan sixties psychedelic rock, or German krautrock, I try to propose a new iconography based on the music and musicians that shaped counterculture in the 20th century. Through the use of sculpture, installation, video, and photography, I wanna bring back a sense of modern “sacrality” in the arts.

Bizarre Love Triangle, 2013, Vinyl, album, turntable, photos, Variable dimensions. © Courtesy of the artist and Yautepec Gallery

What is an artist’s responsibility?

I believe we are living in the dusk of ideology, the “Cambridge Analytical” scandal shed light on this: you see a vegan Canadian young programmer, working for a firm that illegally spied on vulnerable groups in order to create a river of information that could determine their point of view. Who benefited politically from this? The Trump campaign. We live in a world where people live with the fruits of liberalism, but somehow get paid to dismantle them by putting fascists in power. The fact that this young man decided to leak the information came to me as a conscience call, but it didn’t seem to come from an ideological stance necessarily. Ancient spirituality (not religion) through many civilizations, and many millennia, proved to be also a social technology. For example, Buddhist wisdom is based on three principles: “no attachment, no aversion no ignorance.” This algorithm worked effectively in a society that started to function above reason. Buddhism was the only religion that created a society without slavery, expansionism, colonialism, or imperialism, proving wrong that the human being seeks domination by nature. As an artist I feel more than ever the need to find a contemporary bridge to ancient wisdom, to dig deep in the many advances that many different societies achieved in the long path of conquering our lesser egoistic nature.

The relationship with rock & roll is a heretic one. I love that rock & roll will turn a hundred years old in a few decades, but it still exists in marginality—you can go study fine arts but you can’t go study rock & roll (an outdated word for new wave, punk, post punk, synthesis, reggaeton). You can put millions of dollars on a rock & roll artist, but that doesn’t guarantee that the public taste will embrace it. It’s still, to this day, one of the last democratic artistic practices in a world were contemporary art exists mainly for billionaires to speculate with. By matching the contemporary drive of modern counterculture with the ancient instruction manuals that belong to many ancient spiritual sources—Kabbalah, Sufism, Gnosticism, Paganism—I want to resist the capitalist agenda through refilling the spirit with something more than H&M and Starbucks.

Show us the greatest thing you ever made:

The best thing I ever made is this little film called Déjalo Ser (Let It Be). It was done last year at the National Studio for Contemporary Arts LE FRESNOY in France, and shot in Oaxaca, Mexico. It’s a strange omen to Yoko Ono, Antonin Artaud, and Mexican guru superstar Maria Sabina, with a very special appearance of social network superstar Molly Nilsson. Here’s a little peak:

DEJALO SER TRAILER (ENG Subs) from Txema Novelo

Tell us about a work you want to make but never will:

I would love to design and create a pinball machine. To me pinballs are the contemporary automats of civilization. Their complexity, their aspect, their mechanics and sounds make them the ultimate gnostic machines (like the “Uriel machine” but more fun).

The 72 Names of God (From the Old Testament), 2017, New media. © Centro Cultural España en Mexico

Who are three artists we should know but probably don’t?

Shuji Terayama, the Japanese Andy Warhol meets R.W.
